In 1988, a group
of concerned community volunteers came together to
address the lack of services available to homeless
families in the City of Anaheim. The group was able
to purchase a 10-unit apartment building with the
help of the City of Anaheim, and was renovated as
a HomeAid Orange County project. Their message and
mission were clear and simple, to assist these families
in becoming self-sufficient and returning them to
permanent housing as soon as possible. In order to
accomplish this, all adults in the family must be
working on a full time basis, payment of existing
debt is focused on first and then the building of
a savings account for move out costs and an emergency
cushion would begin. This simple plan and philosophy
has resulted in hundreds of families being removed
from the streets with their children and moved back
into becoming contributing community members.

In 2003, the Board of Directors saw that one of the
biggest barriers to families achieving self-sufficiency
was access to low-cost, high quality childcare. A
former medical building was purchased with the help
once again from the City of Anaheim, the Children
and Families Commission of Orange County and the Weingart
Foundation and was completely renovated inside and
out. This premier childcare facility is located just
3 blocks from our shelter program on Anaheim Boulevard
in Anaheim and is licensed for 8 infants and 23 preschool
age children. Our goal is to break the cycle of poverty
and ensure that these children in our care transition
into their school age years having had the best pre-school
education we can provide.
