Halcyon Community GardenOne of Halcyon's newest projects is a garden. There are now three 4' x 6' gardening boxes for residents and their children to enjoy. These boxes were built by KHS&S contracting. Our Resident Services Coordinator worked diligently to identify a sponsor for the garden and found a great sponsor in Disney who filled our gardening boxes with top of the line soil and brought plants and seeds to fill the boxes with.

"This whole project came from a workshop Colleen sent me to about a year ago. I was still trying to find my place at the shelter and knew I wanted to focus on services specifically for the kids, but I didn't ever think of doing something like gardening. This workshop was on fruits and vegetables in a childcare setting, but we talked about ways to stimulate thoughts about healthy eating and one of them was gardening. So the kids and I started our gardening adventure with greenbeans in pots made from cardboard boxes. The kids loved it so much we decided to seek out sponsors for a real garden and that is what we got. So far we have grown purple bellpeppers, lettuce, broccoli, tomatoes and parsley. Those crops came out great. All the families started picking the vegetables and made some great salads. We just started new plants that we will put in the gardening boxes in a few weeks. We planted carrots, cucumbers, radishes, onions and cilantro. We are more than happy when people come by with some input or even just to take a look, so come on by if you'd like!" The shelter held its Annual Dinner to support the shelter and the childcare center. This year the dinner was hosted by the Anaheim East Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was attended by over 300 supporters of our program. During a western-themed dinner and entertainment, over $30,000 was raised to continue our mission at the shelter and the childcare center. Stay tuned for information on our next event to be held in early summer.
